I found my happy place during a weird year...

Salve Irene! My name is Sofia, I'm from Lisbon and I joined GLL back in May. I'm writing to you not with a question but just to introduce myself and let you know why I joined GLL and how it's going. My father studied Law back in the 70's and back then Latin was part of the curriculum. Whenever we visited a church he would translate to me the words on the walls and I thought it was like a superpower! My new year's resolution was to start learning Latin in 2022, so I bought a book by a Portuguese teacher. It didn't work because it was all about conjugations and declinations and other grammar-related things that I couldn't even identify in my native language! So books didn't work and Duolingo wouldn't work either because, well, I was learning some words but I couldn't understand why Marcus was sometimes Marce in a sentence, and there was no way to know why. So I got to know about you through Reddit and, after VAC 2.0 everything you said about learning a new language by getting its context and not by studying tables and tables of grammar made total sense! I've been really loving GLL and it is my hobby and my happy place! 2022 was a super weird year for me (I moved, finished my masters and started a job) and, for that reason, I haven't gotten so ahead (I'm currently in chapter VII) or participated so much. First, I thought that, since I couldn't give the course as much time as I anticipated, I was lacking. But now I realize I am really having fun with the course and using it to de-stress, whenever I have time for myself. It has been the best hobby ever in a crazy and unpredictable year. I cannot express myself in Latin very well yet but one day I will and what matters is that I'm enjoying myself learning a language for the first time, while also learning about Roman culture! This summer I visited a church with my father, here in Setúbal, and I could already recognize some words on the wall 🙂 I even corrected him on a word ehehe! Keep up the good work and you will surely hear more from me in the future! Sofia

I re-read LLPSI to have an intuitive grasp of vocabulary and grammar, and it worked!

Even though I finished "Familia Romana" on my own late last year, I decided to enroll in “Gustatio linguae Latinae” because reading Latin poetry taught me that you really have to have an intuitive grasp of the vocabulary and of the grammar involved. So, I'm going through the book again (plus Irene's lectures) with an eye towards mastery.

I feared it might be too easy, but...

I wasn't a complete beginner in Latin and thought the course might be too easy. I had already worked my way through all of Wheelock's Latin and had fair understanding of grammar and a reasonable vocabulary. Actually, though it was great, because it was a completely different approach. I am much more comfortable with spoken Latin and hope to be able to speak it myself. Irene is a great teacher. She is very attentive to the students' current level and adds segments on Roman culture and literature to the LLPSI curriculum. She's very good about responding to my emails and does that in a very thoughtful way that teaches me alternative (and better) ways of saying what I had tried to say in my original message. I think an immersive approach to learning languages is the best even if the language is Latin. Anyone learning Latin should buy the course. You would have to be a lot better than me to not find it useful. I'm planning to continue with the remaining chapter of the course.

I love that I can watch the lessons again and again!

I've been profiting of this stay-at-home time to keep learning my Latin so I've been following your Familia Romana videos, your Youtube videos as well as your newsletters, and I love them all, they are amazing, you are doing such a great job. I've been learning so much from them and I love the fact that I can rewind them so I can properly learn complex stuff as well. In the videos your pronunciation is so clear and your pace is impeccable for us beginners, and your pedagogical skills are so natural, with good examples, tips, curious facts. I love the Mores videos a lot, they're so interesting too.

I have no regrets, Irene is a great motivator!

I was in search of some help to refresh my Latin which I studied at school and then left alone for several decades. I was looking for something effective, efficient but not boring and eventually I found this course which I choose among several others (the YouTube videos convinced me). I have no regret, this is exactly what I was looking for. I bought the whole package and after having quickly completed the first module I am now approaching the second one. Irene is an excellent teacher very capable to keep my motivation at a very high level.

Super flexible to fit my schedule!

I was attending a classroom based course of Latin, when for personal reasons I decided to opt for an online course. I do not regret my choice because I noticed that I could follow very well the online lessons, review and repeat them any time, and I never felt confused or lost [...]. Mores and Lectiones represent an added value to this learning experience that I sincerely recommend. Irene is a wonderful, knowledgeable, passionate, professional teacher and her course reflect well these characteristics. I recommend this course to anyone interested to approach for the first time or to refresh and deepen the study of Latin. The online course formula, enriched with additional support, is best suited for a flexible schedule. The access to the content is easy and I find especially useful and handy the possibility to listen to it with my mobile even when I am taking a walk or exercise. The passion and competence of Irene is highly motivating to anyone willing study, practice and expand the knowledge of Latin language and literature.

Great course, especially for self learners...

I recently engaged in the course Gustatio and after have looking it over, in a first view I’ve found many things that I was looking for. First of all, an accurate development of the Orberg method guided by the hand of an excellent ‘magistra’ –Irene Regini- who teaches us in a friendly way, explaining the aspects that seems more difficult, slowly with an audible pronunciation. A good treatment of grammar aspects and above all the approach to Latin literature by the sequence of ‘simplicissima, simplex, originalis’ to make it more understandable and easy, as well as ‘mores’ which give us an idea about the Romans live. I'm still working softly on it. I highly recommend this course, especially to those who learn Latin by their own. It's worth it.

I finally found an attractive method!

Since very young I am attracted to ancient Rome. Before enrolling, I saw many of your Irene’s videos on YouTube and it was evident for me that the quality of her work was high. This course helped me expand the few knowledge of Latin I had (I had studied Latin almost 50 years ago in high school). The structure of the course is solid and well assembled. I find Irene’s method very attractive. She revealed a lot of scientific and teaching skills. Now, as a student, I am very pleased, which has not happened in the past, when I studied Latin for two years: we always read texts, made translations, studied grammar and nothing more...

It's not only possible to teach Latin in Latin from zero, as Irene says, but it's also hundreds times more enjoyable and effective. Don't hesitate, you won't regret it!

I feared GLL would be too beginner oriented, but...

I didn't know if this course would suit my level, but it really helped me put some structure in my language learning journey. It's also keeping me accountable and focused. The structure is great, the pace is appropriate, the language used is simple. My favorite part are the lectiones - I love being able to read and understand Classical Latin literature. I've tried a lot of different methods and books but nothing has stuck as much as LLPSI. Irene explains the content of the book in a very simple yet effective way and she enriches it with amazing additional content. I love the community engagement she is also trying to create and her commitment. She is responsive, relatable and knowledgeable, all very appealing qualities in a teacher. I recommend Gustatio to anyone who is interested in approaching Latin for the first time or people that are at a lower intermediate level (which is where I consider myself). I was initially afraid this would be too "beginner" oriented, but even the first lessons are very enjoyable and are a good way to brush up on my Latin and prepare me to the more advanced ones. I hope Irene's plan includes another intermediate course on "Roma Aeterna" - I would sign up in a heartbeat!

I'd recommend this to anyone!

I enrolled in the course because I'd been enjoying your videos on Youtube and I got the feeling that, if I had followed a course with you, I would have learned the basics of the language easily. I wanted to acquire the basics of the language, and I wanted them to be solid. What I like most of the course is the fact that it is entirely in Latin. I think that your teaching method is effective; I really appreciated the kindness and thoroughness of the replies I got to my emails when I was asking some follow up questions. I recommend buying this course to all those who want to learn Latin, remember it or go deeper, without any age distiction.
